We have had a wonderful time Interrailing. If you want to see a lot of Europe in a few weeks the best way to do it is by train, no question. And preferably first class, which doesn’t cost much more.
Last year’s trip will take a lot of beating. I loved it, but said I didn’t want to do it again. Take things easy. Put my feet up. I am not getting any younger etc… It’s quite a commitment, mentally and physically. A huge amount of planning goes into it – one of Anne’s many strengths. Anyway, despite my initial reluctance we are off tomorrow morning on our third Interrail adventure in as many years. Itinerary as follows.
Mostly by train but also by bus, ferry – and, a flight home
- Eurostar (London to Paris)
- Lucerne/Luzern (2 nights)
- Innsbruck (1 night)
- Graz (2 nights)
- Bratislava (1 night)
- Timișoara (2 nights)
- Sibiu (4 nights)
- Bucharest (1 night)
- Veliko Tarnovo (2 nights)
- Plovdiv (2 nights)
- Istanbul (4 nights)
- Kavala (1 night)
- Thassos (4 nights)
- Thessaloniki (1 night)
- Return to London (flight)
This will be our first time in Bulgaria. Neither of us can speak a word of the language which, to make it harder, is in Cyrillic script. I’ve never been to Istanbul, though Anne has (about 40 years ago!). Very much looking forward to that.
There will be a lot of walking and a few early starts, though at least I won’t be limping around Rome and Venice with a torn Achilles tendon like last year – unless I trip over someone’s luggage at St Pancras. There is a decent bit of downtime at the end. Greece has not disappointed yet.
By tomorrow evening we’ll be paddling around in Lake Lucerne. All being well.
